A routine wellness check turned into a bloody confrontation Saturday morning when a man wielding a sword stabbed a Boston Police officer and attacked a clinician. The incident, which unfolded just blocks from Northeastern University, left the suspect dead and multiple first responders hospitalized.
The chaos began around 10:45 a.m. on Hemenway Street after a resident called 911 claiming four armed men were threatening him outside his apartment.
According to Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox, arriving officers found no evidence of the gunmen but began communicating with the caller through his door. Recognizing the man was in the midst of a “mental health crisis,” police summoned Boston EMS and a mental health clinician to the scene.
For nearly 45 minutes, EMS personnel talked to the man through the door, eventually determining he was in immediate need of medical intervention.
When the man finally opened the door, however, he did not come out for help. Instead, he lunged at the responders with a sword, slashing an officer in the arm and throwing a clinician to the ground.

In the ensuing struggle, officers deployed a Taser and fired a service weapon, striking the man. Despite receiving immediate medical care from the paramedics already on-site, the suspect later died at a local hospital. Authorities have not yet released his name.
The wounded officer was saved by a tourniquet applied at the scene before being rushed to the hospital. Several other officers and two EMS clinicians were also treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden confirmed the injuries but did not specify the exact number of officers involved.
“Today serves as a reminder of the dangers inherent in this work and the sacrifice our members make every day,” Boston EMS said in a formal statement following the attack. “Members of Boston EMS show up to save lives—not to be assaulted. No one should face violence for simply doing their job.”
Commissioner Cox described the outcome as “a very sad event for all those involved.” Investigators have stated that this incident does not appear to be linked to another stabbing that occurred near the Northeastern campus earlier this week. The investigation remains ongoing.
