Boaters recovered two separate packages of suspected illicit drugs off the Florida Keys on Tuesday afternoon, handing both over to federal law enforcement authorities.
The first discovery occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Aug. 4, when mariners found a wrapped package offshore of the Lower Keys. The bundle contained roughly one kilogram of suspected cocaine. The boaters brought the package to shore near Mile Marker 34.
Two hours later, at approximately 3:00 p.m., mariners spotted a second package about 14 miles off Ramrod Key.
That parcel contained suspected marijuana of an unspecified weight and was also brought back to land.
According to officials, recreational mariners turned both packages over to the U.S. Border Patrol shortly after reaching shore. Authorities have not released further details regarding the origin of the contraband, and both incidents remain under investigation.
