In a Tuesday appearance on “The Charlie Kirk Show,” Border Czar Tom Homan took aim at Democratic opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, questioning why lawmakers would resist a mandate requiring proof of citizenship for federal elections.
The SAVE Act, a cornerstone of the current Republican legislative agenda, seeks to implement nationwide voter ID rules and require individuals to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote. While the bill passed the House in April with a narrow 216–213 vote, it has since stalled in the Senate, where it faces a 60-vote threshold and staunch opposition from Democrats who argue the measure is discriminatory and could disenfranchise eligible voters.
Homan, however, framed the debate as a matter of national security and common sense.
“Are illegal aliens voting? I mean, bottom line is, what are they afraid of?” Homan asked during the interview. “And they say illegal aliens don’t vote. Well, look, part of DHS’s job is secure elections, and I’m not gonna say what our plan is going forward, but if only U.S. citizens can vote, I don’t see the issue, what they’re concerned about.”

The Border Czar also turned his attention to the broader state of immigration enforcement, linking the current need for large-scale operations to the policies of the previous four years. He specifically criticized former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who repeatedly claimed in 2021 that “the border is secure” and “the border is closed” during appearances on programs like Good Morning America and Meet the Press.
Homan argued that the current administration is now forced to manage the fallout from those assertions.
“They can get angry at ICE all they want. You gotta remember, they set the stage, right? They baked this pie,” Homan said. “Four years of open borders, four years of no immigration enforcement… They’re complicit. They didn’t do anything to Secretary Mayorkas when he said under oath that the border’s secure, so they’re to blame for this.”
According to Homan, the recent expansion of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations is a mathematical necessity following the release of “millions upon millions” of people into the interior of the country. He noted that the public’s desire for border security was a primary driver in the election of President Trump.
“Why is ICE hiring more people? Why was President Trump elected to be the President of the United States and put in the Oval Office? To secure the border and enforce immigration law?” Homan added. “That’s what we’re doing.”
Beyond citizenship requirements, the SAVE Act would also eliminate mail-only voter registration and mandate photo IDs at polling places. While Republicans maintain these steps are essential to “election integrity,” Senate Democrats continue to block the bill, arguing that such hurdles would hinder participation for many Americans.
As the legislative stalemate continues, Homan challenged his critics to explain the lack of funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
“They ought to be concerned about the safety and security of this nation,” he said. “And why is the Department of Homeland Security not funded? That’s what they need to explain.”
