A day after the deadly shooting at a Dallas ICE facility, Border Czar Tom Homan told Fox News that the attack was a foreseeable consequence of “hate being fueled by the media and members of Congress.”
The deadly shooting at a Dallas Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility is the latest result of a dangerous political climate, according to Border Czar Tom Homan, who told Fox News that he had long feared such an attack.
The gunman, identified as Joshua Jahn, 29, killed one migrant and wounded two others before taking his own life. FBI Director Kash Patel released images of bullets with “anti-ICE” scrawled on them, confirming the attack was driven by an “ideological motive.”
Homan told Fox News host Harris Faulkner that he’s been warning of such an incident happening since July.
“I’ve been doing this since 1984… I’ve seen this movie before. I’ve never seen it this bad,” Homan said, explaining that rhetoric from politicians and the media is “what is causing all this hate, and it convinces that small percentage that hate ICE to take action.”
He continued, “When you have a Congressman or someone that ran for Vice President of the United States comparing ICE to nazis, that gives some of these nuts, emboldens them to take action.”
Homan noted this is not an isolated incident in Texas, citing two previous shootings at ICE and Border Patrol facilities since July 4, as well as a bomb threat at the Dallas ICE facility in August. “This is based on hate, hate that is being fueled by the media and members of Congress and governors and mayors,” he stated.
FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X that details from the shooter’s internet activity point to “pre-attack planning.”
The shooter’s brother, Noah Jahn, told NBC News that his brother, an unemployed coder, had not expressed strong political views and that he “didn’t think he was politically interested.”
He described his brother as “unique” and said he was surprised by the incident. “He would not be able to make any shots like that,” Noah said of his brother’s use of a rifle in the attack.
At the scene, investigators found a poster taped to a vehicle that belonged to Jahn. The sign read: “Radioactive fallout from nuclear detonations that’ve passed over these areas more than 2x since 1951.”
The victims in Wednesday’s attack were all ICE detainees.
Politicians from both sides of the aisle have condemned the violence. Texas Senator Ted Cruz made an impassioned plea for an end to politically motivated attacks. “We should not be putting language out there that inspires mad men to commit evil crimes,” Cruz said, urging, “Stop it, please.”
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton wrote on X that the shooting was an attack on law enforcement. “We will continue to do everything in our power to combat the alarming increase of targeted attacks against ICE and all law enforcement by evil, twisted individuals,” Paxton wrote.
