Borders And Blame: Illinois Gov. Pritzker Points To Trump After Loyola Student’s Tragic Murder

The brutal killing of a Loyola University freshman has ignited a fierce political firestorm in Illinois, with Governor JB Pritzker publicly shifting the responsibility for the tragedy toward President Donald Trump and national policy failures. Sheridan Gorman was allegedly shot and killed last Thursday near the university campus while attempting to flee her attacker.

The Department of Homeland Security has identified the suspect as Jose Medina-Medina, a Venezuelan national. According to DHS records, Medina-Medina had been released from federal custody twice in 2023 during the Biden administration.

Despite the suspect’s specific immigration history, Pritzker told reporters on Tuesday that the fault lies with systemic issues rooted in the previous administration.

“This has been a terrible tragedy. And I know that the Gorman family has suffered mightily … there have been real failures. Those failures, of course, extend beyond the borders of Illinois,” Pritzker stated, according to the Chicago Tribune. The Governor characterized the incident as a symptom of a larger “national failure” to implement comprehensive immigration reform and a failure by the current president to target “the worst of the worst.”

Pritzker emphasized that while state and local authorities are responsible for prosecuting violent criminals, the burden of immigration enforcement remains firmly with the federal government. This stance comes after months of the Governor defending Chicago’s safety record and engaging in legal battles with the Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security.

In January, Pritzker backed a lawsuit against federal agents, accusing them of “terrorizing” Illinois communities and undermining public safety.

The political tension is further heightened by the actions of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who expanded the city’s sanctuary policies in October. This move coincided with “Operation Midway Blitz,” a federal crackdown intended to remove high-risk criminal aliens.

At the time, former DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin argued that sanctuary policies championed by Pritzker and other local leaders were actively attracting dangerous individuals to the city.

A spokesperson for Pritzker urged the Trump administration to “stop politicizing heinous tragedies” and instead focus on reinstating federal funds for violence prevention.

The debate over border control remains a central theme, as Democrats continue to point to a failed 2024 bipartisan border bill as the missed opportunity to prevent such crises.

While the Trump administration has maintained strict control over the southern border during his second term, Pritzker and his allies argue that the lack of legislative reform is the true culprit behind the lapse in security that led to Medina-Medina’s presence in the country.
