A community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, is reeling after a local couple was arrested for the alleged severe physical abuse of their four-month-old baby boy.
The investigation kicked off on April 22 when the infant was brought into UPMC Lititz Hospital. Medical staff immediately noticed a troubling array of injuries that didn’t look accidental. Hospital workers found the tiny baby covered in dark bruises and abrasions across his body. Even more alarming were the facial injuries: a cut lip and a torn upper frenulum—the sensitive tissue that connects the upper lip to the gums.
Detectives from the Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Department were called in to investigate. In a public statement detailing the grim discovery, the department noted, “During the investigation, detectives spoke with medical professionals who explained the injuries as a lip laceration, ecchymosis, and a laceration of the upper frenulum. There were also bruises and abrasions over the body.”

When first questioned by police, the mother, 26-year-old Jessica Oster, tried to explain away the injuries. She claimed she had fed the baby with a bottle and left him alone for about 30 minutes, only to find him hurt when she returned. She also suggested to officers that the body bruises might have come from the child’s bouncy seat or from her husband handling him during bath time.
However, investigators say her story fell apart under questioning. Detectives reported that Jessica Oster eventually broke down and admitted she grew deeply frustrated by the baby’s crying. She confessed that she “used too much force when placing a bottle into the baby’s mouth,” which caused the severe mouth injuries.
The investigation quickly shifted to the father, James Oster, who allegedly confessed to his own layer of abuse. According to police documents, James admitted to hurting the boy during bath time. He told detectives that while the baby was lying face down in the bathwater, he grabbed the infant’s head and pulled it backward with force. James claimed he did this out of panic to stop the child’s face from going under the water.
As the investigation deepened, police executed a search at the couple’s home to look into the bouncy seat Jessica had blamed for the bruising. What they found painted a stark picture of neglect. According to court records, detectives noted a heavy, overwhelming smell of urine inside the home, and the bouncy seat’s bottom cushion was completely soaked through with old stains.

Furthermore, police revealed that both parents admitted to a dangerous daily routine: they frequently fed the four-month-old by simply propping a bottle up with a blanket, leaving the tiny infant entirely alone in the bouncy seat in a separate room.
Both parents are now locked up and facing a long list of criminal charges. Jessica Oster has been hit with two counts of felony aggravated assault, alongside charges of simple assault, child endangerment, and recklessly endangering another person. James Oster faces an equally heavy sheet, including aggravated assault, simple assault, two counts of endangering the welfare of children, and reckless endangerment.
The couple remains in custody and is legally scheduled to face a judge for their preliminary hearing on Tuesday, May 26.
