OCALA, Fla. – The morning of December 28, 2025, began with a 911 call reporting an unresponsive woman floating in a swimming pool, but what was initially presented as a tragic accident has now been classified as a cold-blooded killing.
Ocala Police announced that 50-year-old Michael Rowland is in custody, facing charges for the death of his girlfriend, 72-year-old Diane German.
The investigation launched early that winter morning when officers arrived at the home on 4549 NE 6th Street at 6:56 a.m. and discovered German deceased. Rowland, who made the initial call to authorities, claimed he simply found her in the water when he woke up.
However, detectives quickly noted that the boyfriend’s story didn’t quite square with the physical evidence at the scene.
Over the following months, investigators meticulously picked apart Rowland’s timeline. Surveillance footage and digital phone records placed him at German’s residence the night before her body was found, contradicting his earlier statements.

Police also reported finding evidence that Rowland had attempted to hide inside his own vehicle. The final turning point came when the medical examiner’s report officially ruled the death a homicide, specifically citing signs of strangulation.
Because no one else was found at the home during the window of German’s death, and no other suspects were ever identified, the focus narrowed solely on Rowland.
He was recently apprehended in Jacksonville and is now charged with second-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence. He currently awaits transport back to Marion County to face these charges.
While the Ocala Police Department continues to refine its case, they have signaled that the heavy lifting of the investigation is complete.
In a statement following the arrest, the department noted, “We extend our deepest condolences to Diane German’s family, and we thank Detective Grosso and the staff involved for their dedicated, thorough work on this investigation.” Additional updates are expected to be released as the prosecution moves forward in court.
