The United States government has raised an urgent alarm over troop movements in Sudan, warning that mass atrocities may be imminent around the city of El Obeid.
According to an official press statement released on June 22, 2026, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their allied groups are currently gathering troops around the strategic city. Washington officials stated that this mobilization “significantly increases the risk of violence against civilians, including attacks on civilian objects and further escalation of the conflict in El Obeid and across the Kordofan region.”
The escalating situation threatens to plunge the region deeper into what is already a severe humanitarian crisis. The U.S. government explicitly demanded that the RSF and its partners halt all actions that could put local populations in danger, block aid deliveries, or cause more civilian suffering.
The statement reminded all fighting factions of their legal duties under international humanitarian law to protect innocent people and to ensure that individuals trying to flee the violence can “do so without fear or obstruction.”
The ongoing war has heavily impacted the local population. The State Department noted that civilians continue to bear the brunt of the violence, suffering immense devastation throughout the conflict. In response, Washington is calling on all belligerents to immediately step up and “facilitate safe, rapid, and unhindered humanitarian access” while taking concrete steps to prevent further atrocities.
Stressing that “there is no military solution to this conflict,” the United States urged the warring sides to enter into a negotiated settlement without any prior conditions.
Looking forward, U.S. diplomats state they will continue to coordinate with international partners and local Sudanese groups. The stated goals of these ongoing efforts are to secure a humanitarian truce, guarantee open access for aid organizations, and establish a clear path toward a civilian-led government and a lasting peace. The statement concluded by emphasizing that stability is the only way Sudan can preserve its unity and return to independent civilian governance.
