Federal investigators have opened a leak investigation into Joe Kent, the former Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, according to a report by Semafor. The inquiry focuses on allegations that Kent improperly shared classified information with unauthorized individuals.
The FBI probe into the former high-ranking official reportedly began months before his departure from the administration. Shelby Talcott, White House Correspondent for Semafor, reported that four people ‘with direct knowledge’ of the matter confirmed the investigation was already underway during Kent’s tenure at the agency.
Kent resigned this past Tuesday in a public protest against the ongoing war in Iran. In his resignation letter, he claimed that Iran “posed no imminent threat to our nation” and alleged that President Donald Trump initiated the conflict due to “pressure from Israel.”

Following the public release of his resignation, White House aides and allies immediately slammed Kent. However, sources familiar with the situation told Semafor that the federal inquiry is not a reaction to his resignation but rather a months-long effort to determine whether sensitive materials were mishandled.
Kent, a former Green Beret, had served in the role since being confirmed last year. The FBI has not provided a public statement regarding the status of the investigation.
