Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary frontman whose captivating “Prince of Darkness” persona cemented his status as one of rock’s most iconic figures, has died at the age of 76. The news comes less than three weeks after his emotional farewell performance with Black Sabbath.

A statement released by the Osbourne family this morning read, “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.” No specific cause of death was provided, though Osbourne had battled various significant health issues in recent years.

Born John Michael Osbourne in Aston, Birmingham, in 1948, Osbourne’s tough upbringing in an industrial working-class environment profoundly influenced his musical direction. He rose to global fame as the voice of Black Sabbath, a pioneering band whose heavy, cacophonous sound, inspired by horror and the bleak realities of their surroundings, revolutionized British rock and laid the foundation for heavy metal. Albums like their self-titled debut (1970) and Paranoid (1970), featuring anthems like “Iron Man” and “War Pigs,” became cornerstone works of the genre.

Beyond his musical innovation, Osbourne was a figure of extreme notoriety. His stage antics, including famously biting the head off a bat (which he believed to be a prop), became legendary. His struggles with substance abuse were well-documented, at one point leading to an attempt on his wife Sharon’s life in 1989, an incident he later recounted with profound regret.

In later life, Osbourne found a new generation of fans through the hit reality TV series The Osbournes, which ran from 2002 to 2005. The show offered a surprisingly candid and often humorous look into his family life, showcasing his bewildered charm amidst the domestic chaos.

Osbourne’s death follows his emotional reunion with original Black Sabbath bandmates Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, and Bill Ward on July 5th for Back to the Beginning, an all-star farewell concert in Birmingham.
