TAMPA, Fla. – Bucs QB Baker Mayfield is having a record-breaking season, but Mayfield is focused on his team with one goal, and that is to beat the Commanders Sunday and advance in the playoffs. However, the game is going.

“Mentality for us, find any way to win, whether it’s a shootout, low scoring, make the plays that matter when it counts,” Mayfield said. “It’s going to be a full game. You’ve got to be locked in.”

The second-year Buccaneer is putting up monster numbers. Mayfield has thrown for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns. Part of that is having new offensive coordinator Liam Coen mix up the plays and attack opposing defenses. Mayfield also credits his offensive line as being on the same page.

Another factor in Mayfiel’s life is that he doesn’t use social media or keep receipts of those who criticized him in the past.

“That’s been a growing process,” Mayfield said. “To say that I’ve always been like that would be a lie. I used to keep a lot of notes and try to prove people wrong, but that’s not the way to go about life.”

The Bucs are 3rd in the NFL in total offense. In Week 1 the Bucs throttled the Commanders 37-20 with Mayfield throwing four touchdowns. As good as that was, Mayfield feels this Bucs offense is much better now.

“The biggest difference is the run game,” Mayfield said. “When we’ve needed to run the ball to win the games we’ve been able to do that. that’s a physical mentality and everybody being on the same page with that.”

Mayfield and the Bucs will be going up against a Washington Commanders team with a good offense led by rookie QB Jayden Daniels. Ironically, Daniels beat out Mayfield in Pro Bowl voting, but again, Mayfield is not about stats or numbers of individual recognition. he says he gave that stuff up a long time ago.
