A 33-year-old McLean man is facing federal charges after allegedly sending a graphic death threat to a federal official—later identified as Richard Grenell—and then trying to convince agents he was someone else entirely when they showed up at his door.

Scott Allen Bolger has been charged by criminal complaint with transmitting threats in interstate commerce and making false statements. If convicted, he could face up to five years in federal prison.

The investigation began following a text message sent on December 23 via Google Voice, a service that masks the user’s actual phone number. The message, directed at a federal employee, was explicit in its intent.

“Step on U Street and get a bullet put between your eyes, loyalist pig skin pu**y,” the text read, according to court records.

While the Department of Justice did not name the target in its initial filings, Fox News identified the recipient as Richard Grenell, a prominent figure in national politics. Grenell confirmed the target was him in a statement on X, publicly thanking law enforcement officials Pam Bondi, Kash Patel, and U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan for their swift action.

“I am grateful… for finding this deranged individual and locking him up,” Grenell wrote. “His name is Scott Bolger.”

The situation took a bizarre turn when the federal task force arrived at Bolger’s McLean residence to interview him regarding the threat. Instead of complying, Bolger allegedly attempted to deceive the officers.

According to the complaint, Bolger claimed his name was “Brian Black” and insisted he did not know anyone named Scott Bolger. Agents, however, had already identified him.

“Threats of violence are serious crimes with serious consequences,” said Lindsey Halligan, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. “Those who target federal employees should know that we will investigate and prosecute these offenses to the fullest extent of the law.”
