An Alexandria federal judge sentenced a McLean man Wednesday to one year and three months in prison after he used a masked phone number to threaten the life of a public official.
Court documents reveal that on December 23, 2025, 33-year-old Scott Allen Bolger used Google Voice—a service that hides a sender’s actual phone number—to text a death threat to former Kennedy Center Director Richard Grenell.
In the message, Bolger threatened to put a bullet in Grenell’s head. Investigators found that Bolger had researched Grenell’s personal phone number and established contact with him before sending the threat.
When federal agents arrived at Bolger’s home to investigate, Bolger gave them a fake name, claiming he was “Brian Black” and stating that he did not know anyone named Scott Bolger.
As part of his plea agreement, Bolger also admitted to a multi-year harassment campaign against a second victim who is not a public official. Between October 2022 and November 2025, Bolger used various fake accounts on X and Proton Mail to target the individual.
He researched the victim online, sent them private indecent images of themselves, and created a public-facing profile featuring those same indecent images.
The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force Washington Field Office led the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jacob Mercer and Russell L. Carlberg prosecuted the case.
