TAMPA, Fla. – Residents across the Tampa Bay area might want to keep their winter coats handy for just a little longer. As the region prepares to ring in the New Year, Old Man Winter is making a brief but noticeable guest appearance, bringing wind chills and potential frost before a significant warm-up arrives later in the week.

The final day of the year is seeing plenty of sunshine, but don’t let the bright skies fool you. Temperatures are struggling to reach 58 degrees today, with a biting northwest wind making it feel much colder. Early risers dealt with wind chills in the low 30s, and the shivering isn’t over yet.

According to the latest detailed National Weather Service forecast, temperatures will plummet tonight. Clear skies and calming winds will set the stage for a chilly New Year’s Eve, with lows dipping to around 38 degrees. The cold snap is significant enough to bring patchy frost after 1 a.m., meaning sensitive vegetation should be covered and pets brought indoors.

A Chilly Start to the New Year

If you have plans for New Year’s Day morning, expect a crisp start. Patchy frost is likely to linger until around 9 a.m., with wind chill values hovering near 38 degrees. However, the afternoon looks promising for outdoor celebrations. Once the morning chill subsides, thermometers should rebound to a more comfortable 66 degrees under sunny skies.

The gradual thaw begins in earnest on Thursday. While Thursday night will still be cool with lows around 44 degrees and some patchy fog developing, the workweek ends on a high note. Friday is forecast to be mostly sunny with highs climbing back into the low 70s—classic Florida winter weather.

Weekend Outlook: Rain Returns

The warming trend comes with a price, however. Clouds will begin to gather late Friday night, setting the stage for an unsettled start to the weekend. Saturday brings a 40 percent chance of showers, particularly after 1 p.m., accompanied by gusty southwest winds that could reach 21 mph.

The rain chances ramp up Saturday night, with precipitation likely (60 percent) before tapering off after midnight.

Fortunately, the wet weather appears to be a quick mover. By Sunday, the sunshine returns, bringing highs near 73 degrees. The early outlook for next week suggests a stretch of beautiful weather, with sunny skies and highs holding steady in the mid-74s for both Monday and Tuesday.

For now, locals are advised to layer up and enjoy the rare winter chill while it lasts.
