MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents and businesses in the Lower Keys, particularly Key West, to reports of fake or counterfeit money being passed off as legitimate currency. The circulating bills are identifiable as props intended for use in films and movies.
The most notable instances involve $100 bills that, while resembling genuine currency at a casual glance, are explicitly marked as fake. According to the Sheriff’s Office press release, the bills bear markings stating they are to be used “only in making motion pictures.”
Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and double-check any bills received during transactions.
The recent discovery follows a similar warning issued by the Key West Police Department concerning the circulation of fake $20 bills.
Businesses are advised to train their employees on quickly identifying these fraudulent notes to prevent financial losses and to report any attempts to pass the fake currency to local law enforcement.
