The gubernatorial campaign for U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds took aim at rival candidate David Jolly on Thursday following comments Jolly made during a recent campaign appearance in Boca Raton.
In a press statement issued by the Byron Donalds for Governor campaign, spokesperson Gates McGavick criticized Jolly’s platform on gun policy, state executive power, and local infrastructure.
During the Boca Raton event, Jolly stated that if elected governor, he intends to challenge Florida’s open carry gun laws. According to the release, Jolly remarked that he “intends to test the limits and executive authorities of the Governor’s office” in an effort to reverse current rulings permitting open carry in the state.
The campaign statement also highlighted comments Jolly made regarding the recent renaming of Palm Beach International Airport to President Donald J. Trump International Airport.
According to the release, Jolly expressed strong opposition to the change, calling himself a “warrior” against the rebrand and stating, “I don’t want to fly through that airport ANYMORE”.
Additionally, the release noted that Jolly reiterated a previous campaign promise, stating that his first act as governor would be to “apologize TO THE WORLD” on behalf of the state of Florida.
In response to the remarks, Donalds campaign Communications Director Gates McGavick issued a formal statement dismissing Jolly’s platform.
“The only apology David Jolly should be giving is to the people of Florida for having to watch his campaign and subsequent unraveling,” McGavick said. “Florida has succeeded under Republican leadership by standing up for women, children, parents, and freedom and rejecting David Jolly and the Democrats’ ‘pretty far Left’ agenda. Florida will continue that success with Byron Donalds as governor”.
The statements come as candidates sharpen their messaging ahead of the upcoming Florida gubernatorial race.
