Republican U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds of Naples secured the GOP nomination for Florida governor on Tuesday, finishing with 49.1 percent of the vote, or 682,385 ballots, according to results with 78.5 percent of expected votes counted and an estimated 380,000 remaining.
Jay Collins placed second with 24.7 percent, or 343,379 votes, followed by James Fishback at 10.1 percent with 140,491 votes.
Donalds entered the race with the endorsement of President Donald Trump. The seat is open as Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is barred by term limits from seeking another term in the nation’s third-most populous state.
On the Democratic side, former Republican congressman David Jolly, who switched parties, won the nomination with 61.8 percent of the vote, totaling 679,032 ballots.
Dayna Foster finished second at 14.7 percent with 161,692 votes. Dotie Joseph received 9.5 percent (104,017 votes), Evelyn Castillo-Bach 7.6 percent (83,404 votes), Thomas Fernandez 3.7 percent (40,946 votes) and Stephann Norman the remainder with 30,196 votes.
The winners will face each other in the November general election.
