California Governor Gavin Newsom called for the firing of White House official Stephen Miller during a book event in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on Thursday. His comments came directly after the news that Kristi Noem had left her position in the administration.
Addressing a crowd that applauded Noem’s exit, Newsom stated that the focus should now shift to Miller.
“Let’s be honest here, the dark heart of this administration is not Noem, it’s Stephen Miller, and he needs to be next,” Newsom said. He characterized Noem as a “scapegoat” and alleged that her actions were “designed by Miller.”
Newsom detailed his concerns regarding recent federal actions in California, referencing a transition-period phone call with Donald Trump and the subsequent federalization of 4,000 National Guard members.
He also pointed to the deployment of 700 active-duty Marines to Los Angeles, describing these events as a “preview of things to come.”
The Governor specifically highlighted the tactics used in immigration enforcement, mentioning Greg Bovino and operations targeting locations like Home Depot.
He further criticized the use of masked, unidentified personnel on the streets of Los Angeles and a Supreme Court “shadow docket” ruling that he claimed allowed for racial profiling based on skin color, language, and congregation.
Newsom concluded by asserting that while Noem had her “fingerprints” on these policies, they were ultimately part of “Stephen Miller’s playbook.” He reiterated his demand for Miller’s removal to ensure accountability for the administration’s direction.
