California Gov. Newsom Visits New College Of Florida, Violating His ‘Red State’ Travel Ban

Florida is so enticing under Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis that even California Governor Gavin Newsom wants to be here — even if it violates his own travel ban.

Far-left Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom visited Sarasota on Wednesday to rally with left-wing students and faculty at New College, the smallest of Florida’s public universities.

DeSantis overhauled the school’s board of trustees in January, appointing a batch of conservatives, including journalist Christopher Rufo, to guide New College away from wokeism.

As Sarasota Herald-Tribune reporter Zac Anderson tweeted on Wednesday, New College “has become the epicenter of the culture wars” after DeSantis “initiated a conservative transformation.”

“Newsom mocks [the] focus on DEI bureaucracy at New College, saying it must be really big to attract so much attention,” Anderson added with a brief video of Newsom’s talk. “When somebody says it was 4 people before being dismantled, Newsom chuckles ‘I don’t mean to laugh but geez.’”

“I’m crawling out of my skin for you,” Newsom added. “I want you to know you’re not alone. You matter.”

Chuckle or not, Newsom apparently has given up on his own state’s ban on travel to Florida and other red states as he strokes his own ego and potential presidential prospects.

California under Newsom prohibited official travel to Florida and four other states to protest their conservative policies. As of last August, the list had grown to 23 red states.

Newsom also had recently visited Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

NBC News reported last week that California was considering ending the ban because, as Democratic Senate Leader Toni Atkins admitted, “polarization is not working.”

Atkins suggested California would replace the ban with a taxpayer-funded advertising campaign that presumably would seek to shame red states into adopting California-style wokeism.

Perhaps California lawmakers should focus on a campaign that seeks to keep their constituents from moving to Florida and other red states, since more than 500,000 people have left the state in the last three years.

Additionally, the ban meant nothing to Newsom anyway.

As The Free Press reported last year, he took his family on a vacation to Montana, claiming it was acceptable because it was privately funded, although his state-funded security detail was with him.

And speaking of family, California is so awful under Newsom that even his own family fled.

The Free Press reported last September that Newsom’s in-laws, Kenneth and Judith Siebel, became residents of Naples in 2020, just as the pandemic started.

In response to Newsom’s visit, DeSantis’ spokesman Bryan Griffin noted, “Governor DeSantis is focused on getting Florida’s public institutions of higher learning refocused on academics and truth. Stunts from political opponents don’t matter and have no effect.”
