A Los Angeles man is facing the possibility of spending the rest of his life behind bars after a federal jury in Pennsylvania convicted him of running a systematic, years-long scheme to sexually exploit and “train” a minor.
John Douglas Burch, 56, was found guilty late yesterday on all counts, including enticement of a minor for sexually explicit conduct and prostitution, as well as traveling across state lines to engage in illicit sexual acts. The verdict follows a trial that detailed a chilling timeline of abuse beginning nearly a decade ago.
Federal prosecutors, led by U.S. Attorney David Metcalf, presented evidence showing that Burch’s “training” regime was a calculated effort to strip a young girl of her autonomy.
Starting when the victim was just 14 years old, Burch forced her to consume violent pornography and listen to explicit audio recordings. He then coerced her into producing and transmitting sexually explicit videos of herself over the internet—a process that continued until she turned 17.

The exploitation extended into the physical world between 2014 and 2015. On two separate occasions, Burch traveled from California to Pennsylvania specifically to sexually assault the girl at a hotel in Montgomery County.
The case took an even darker turn as Burch reportedly began grooming the victim for commercial sex. According to court filings, he directed the teenager to meet with various men in Pennsylvania for sexual encounters. To ensure his orders were followed, Burch required the girl to film these acts and send him the footage as “proof” of her compliance.
“The defendant was charged… arising from a nearly decade-long scheme to sexually exploit children online and ‘train’ them to be his ‘sex slaves,’” officials stated during the proceedings.

The investigation was spearheaded by the FBI’s Philadelphia field office as part of “Project Safe Childhood,” a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to pool federal and local resources against child predators. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Justin Ashenfelter and Anthony Carissimi prosecuted the case, securing the conviction on all counts brought forth in the January 2024 indictment.
Burch is scheduled for sentencing on August 25. He faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison, though the severity of the charges allows for a maximum sentence of life. Additionally, he could be hit with a $1,000,000 fine and mandatory restitution for the victim. For now, the man who traveled 2,500 miles to commit these crimes remains in federal custody, awaiting his final judgment.
