California Congressman Eric Swalwell has a new plan for dealing with President Donald Trump’s trade policies: “Impeach the tariffs.”

Swalwell made the comments Thursday during an interview on CNN. He argued that Democrats need to focus on lowering costs for Americans. This comes just days after President Trump announced a 10% tax on goods from several European countries. The President said this was because those nations opposed his idea to buy Greenland from Denmark.

On CNN, host Kasie Hunt asked Swalwell a direct question. She noted that Swalwell has talked about impeaching the President before. She asked what exactly Trump has done to deserve that.

Swalwell, who is currently running to be the governor of California, took a different angle.

“Well, let me just say this. I think we should impeach the tariffs. That has to be the day one priority,” Swalwell said.

He told Hunt that the President promised to lower costs but hasn’t delivered. Swalwell claimed Trump is “zero for 370” on his promises. He argued that Trump is costing people too much money at the grocery store.

He also made a serious claim about safety and rights. He mentioned an incident involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), saying women are “being shot three times in the face” by agents.

Hunt pressed him on his choice of words. She reminded him that tariffs are a policy choice, not a crime you can impeach someone for. She asked for clarity.

Swalwell explained that if Democrats take control of the House in the upcoming midterm elections, they should use their power to investigate. He wants to bring in administration officials for questioning. He specifically mentioned looking into the “terrorizing of immigrants” and investigating how much money the President has made in his first year back in office.

The Congressman also brought up Attorney General Pam Bondi. He previously suggested she should be impeached over how she handled the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein.

Swalwell’s strict stance on immigration enforcement is a big part of his run for governor. He has promised that if he wins, he will make life hard for ICE agents in California. He said he would deny them driver’s licenses. He also promised to ban anyone who worked for ICE from getting a job with the state government later.

Swalwell has faced his own controversies in the past. In 2023, he was removed from the House Intelligence Committee by then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy. This happened after reports surfaced that Swalwell had been close to a woman named Christine Fang, who was accused of being a Chinese spy. Swalwell has always denied doing anything wrong.
