An Escondido, California, man known in his neighborhood for the extensive display of American and pro-Trump flags outside his home has died following a violent confrontation in his front yard.
Kerry Sheron, a 69-year-old U.S. Army veteran, passed away on Sunday, May 24, from severe injuries sustained during what family members described as a “brutal and unprovoked attack outside his home.”
The incident took place on the afternoon of May 20. According to the Escondido Police Department, officers arrived at the scene to find Sheron suffering from significant trauma. A bystander who attempted to step in and stop the assault was also injured during the encounter.
Shortly after the incident, police located and arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler, who matched the physical description of the suspect provided by witnesses. Butler was initially booked on attempted murder charges. Following Sheron’s death, local authorities announced that the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case details to determine how the charges will be amended. Prior to the victim’s passing, Butler appeared in court and entered a plea of not guilty.

Neighbors and local news outlets noted that Sheron’s residence was highly recognizable in the community due to the large amount of pro-Trump memorabilia and American flags decorating the property.
While investigators have not officially declared a motive, Sheron’s wife, Maria Garcia, believes the political displays made her husband a target. “They don’t like the flags,” Garcia stated. “I don’t know why. I support America. My husband is [a] veteran.”
Sheron’s family has since launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover expenses, remembering him as a proud veteran whose “loss has devastated our family beyond words.”
