The Canadian border is opening to nearly all American travelers for the first time since March 2020, but those who wish to cross will have to be fully vaccinated, the government said.

Canada’s ban, which took place nearly 16 months ago, is now being tentatively lifted for general travel, according to a the Public Health Agency of Canada’s statement. Travelers will be allowed to enter the country through both its physical border as well as five designated airport hubs.

In addition to providing proof of vaccination, travelers must additionally fill out the country’s new international travel health form, known as ArriveCAN.

The health agency acknowledged that traveling would not be as smooth and expeditious as usual, and it will continue to be more concerned with safety than efficiency, the Associated Press reported.

The messages mirror closely to what the government has been saying regarding essential travel as well, making active pushes on social media to inform travelers of Canada’s lengthy entry requirements.

The guidelines include an eight-day waiting period for COVID-19 test results and public health affirmations regarding quarantine plans.

The U.S. does not plan to reopen the border until Aug. 21, which also includes Mexico, citing worries about worsening the spread of COVID-19, according to the AP.
