WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A Winter Haven woman was arrested Sunday morning after home surveillance footage captured her attempting to open locked car doors on her own street, police said.
Officers responded to a home on Giorgio Drive around 11:22 a.m. on Aug. 23 after a resident reported a suspicious person on the property. According to the homeowner, a Ring camera alert roughly 30 minutes earlier showed a woman walking into the front yard and approaching two vehicles parked in the driveway.
Video footage showed the woman pulling on the door handle of the first vehicle before finding it locked. She then tried the door handle of the second vehicle, which was also locked, before leaving the property.
Police canvassing the neighborhood located 32-year-old Natalie Adou Adjo, who lived along the same street. Officers noted that Adjo was wearing the same clothes seen in the doorbell video. When shown an image from the camera, Adjo confirmed it was her in the recording.
When questioned by officers about why she was trying to get into the cars, Adjo stated she was not attempting to enter the vehicles and was instead searching for cigarettes.
Adjo was arrested and booked into the Polk County Jail. She faces two third-degree felony counts of attempted burglary of an unoccupied vehicle.
“This is another case where ensuring that car doors were locked, kept this victim from possibly losing their property,” said Winter Haven Police Chief Vance Monroe. “I applaud the victim for taking this step to prevent crime, and encourage all of our citizens to do the same.”
