A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah will take effect on Wednesday, following successful mediation efforts by the United States and France.

The accord aims to end a conflict that has claimed thousands of lives since it erupted following the Gaza war last year. Describing the agreement as a “permanent cessation of hostilities,” US President Biden emphasized the need to ensure Hezbollah and other militant groups no longer threaten Israel’s security.

The ceasefire, set to begin at 4 a.m. local time, comes after Israel’s security cabinet approved the deal in a 10-1 vote. President Biden stated that both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati had accepted the terms.

“This agreement ensures a pathway for civilians on both sides to return safely to their communities,” Biden said, noting Israel’s plans for a gradual withdrawal over 60 days. In the meantime, the Lebanese army will deploy 5,000 troops in southern Lebanon to secure the region and prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding its military infrastructure.

Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to the agreement but warned of decisive action against any violations. “We retain complete military freedom of action. If Hezbollah violates the agreement or attempts to rearm, we will strike decisively,” he said, highlighting the damage inflicted on Hezbollah’s capabilities during the conflict.

The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, praised the ceasefire, calling it an opportunity to end a devastating chapter. “Concrete actions are now required to consolidate today’s achievement,” she added.
