Central Florida Traffic Alert: I-4 Westbound Fully Reopens Following Depression In Polk County

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – All westbound lanes of Interstate 4 in Polk County are back in service today after a sudden roadway depression triggered a major traffic disruption. The incident, which began Thursday evening, forced a total shutdown of the highway between Exit 55 (Haines City) and Exit 58, just past Champions Gate.

The Florida Highway Patrol initially responded to reports of a significant dip or depression in the pavement near Milepost 57. Concerned that the road surface was no longer safe for high-speed travel, troopers and transportation officials immediately diverted all westbound traffic off the interstate.

For much of the night and early morning, drivers were forced onto a detour involving Ronald Reagan Parkway and US Highway 27 before they could circle back to the interstate.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office monitored the impacted area overnight as construction crews worked under floodlights to assess and stabilize the ground. By the start of the morning commute, the repair effort had progressed enough to allow the two left lanes to open.

However, the bottleneck caused significant delays for those heading toward Tampa during the early rush hour.

While the structural issues have been addressed, motorists may still see crews finishing minor tasks on the shoulder. Traffic flow is currently returning to normal, though some residual congestion remains near the Champions Gate entrance.

ORIGINAL REPORT: Drivers in Central Florida are facing a major headache tonight as a significant portion of westbound Interstate 4 has been completely shut down in Polk County. A depression in the pavement—essentially a dip or hole in the road surface—has forced state troopers and highway crews to block off all westbound lanes between Exit 55, near Haines City, and Exit 58.

The closure comes at a particularly difficult time for commuters and travelers moving through the heart of the state.

As of now, anyone heading west toward Tampa is being forced off the interstate at Exit 58. From there, drivers must navigate local detours.

Florida Department of Transportation crews are already on the move, with repair teams and engineers heading to the site to figure out exactly what caused the ground to drop.

While the term “depression” is often a precursor to the word “sinkhole” in Florida, officials haven’t yet confirmed the specific cause. They are currently focused on assessing whether the road needs a simple patch or a much more extensive structural overhaul.

There is currently no timeline for when the lanes might reopen. Traffic is already backing up for miles, and local roads through Haines City are expected to see a massive influx of vehicles as the detour takes effect. Law enforcement is urging motorists to avoid the area entirely if possible or to pack a healthy dose of patience if they have no other choice but to follow the diversion.
