Chik-Fil-a, Chic-Fil-A, or Chick-Fil-a? That’s the question of the hour.

As it turns out, the last spelling is the appropriate spelling. Most people believe the proper spelling is one of the first two, without ever actually considering that there may be a ‘ck’ in there somewhere. That is what’s known as the Mandela Effect.

Named after Nelson Mandela, The Mandela Effect is based upon the presumption that a large group of people believes to have been spelled, said, or happened a certain way. For example, most people believe Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 1980s. The fact is, Nelson Mandela died on December 5, 2013 – something that shocks most people when they hear it.

There is a conspiracy theory surrounding the Mandela Effect in which people believe an alternate universe exists, where things may have happened differently in another place and time – far-fetched, but believed by many.

So, how then, did Chick-Fil-A get its common misspelling?

Perhaps it’s got something to do with the fact that much of their marketing surrounds the ‘Eat Mor Chikn’ signage with cows that everyone knows and loves. ‘Chikn’ can easily be correlated to the spelling of the brand name, which can then become what people see in their mind’s eye when writing out or spelling the chain name.

Easy to misconstrue, indeed.

Regardless of the spelling, one thing’s for sure: it’s gotten a lot of buzz and has of people talking – and it’s quite arguably one of the most beloved chicken chains in America.
