Tensions boiled over at the United Nations Security Council today as China launched a blistering verbal assault on the United States, condemning American military actions in Venezuela and demanding the immediate release of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

In a rare emergency meeting, Beijing’s representative, Fu Cong, accused Washington of overstepping its bounds and violating international norms.

The rhetoric marked a sharp escalation in diplomatic friction, with China painting the U.S. intervention not as a peacekeeping mission, but as a violation of sovereign rights.

“As a permanent member of the Council, the US has disregarded the grave concerns of the international community, wantonly trampled upon Venezuela’s sovereignty, security and legitimate rights and interests, and seriously violated the principles of sovereign equality,” Fu told the assembly.

The Chinese delegation portrayed the operation as a unilateral move that ignores the checks and balances the UN is supposed to uphold. Fu explicitly rejected the idea that American military power grants it judicial authority on the global stage.

“No country can act as the world’s police, nor can any state presume to be the international judge,” Fu said. “We demand that the United States change its course, cease its bullying and coercive practices.”

Beyond the condemnation of military tactics, Beijing issued a specific demand regarding the aftermath of the operation: the release of the detained former Venezuelan leader and the former First Lady.

The call for Maduro’s release places China firmly in opposition to the U.S. strategy in Caracas, setting the stage for a protracted diplomatic standoff within the Security Council.
