In a fiery segment, Chris Cuomo took aim at Democrats for what he called “performative opposition” to former President Donald Trump’s recent tariff threats, arguing that their criticism lacked substance and failed to address the real issues at hand. Cuomo’s rebuke centered on what he described as a lack of meaningful action and a tendency to prioritize political theatrics over practical solutions.

“What really bothers me about all of it is that everybody knew these tariffs weren’t going to be operative, in all likelihood,” Cuomo said. “Certainly, Democrats like [Senate Majority Leader] Chuck Schumer knew it was a ploy, and yet he had to have his own roots.”

Cuomo criticized Democrats for focusing on the potential impact of Trump’s tariff threats on everyday consumer goods, such as beer and avocados, rather than addressing the broader trade imbalances between the U.S. and its neighbors, Mexico and Canada. He pointed out that Mexico and Canada already impose significantly higher tariffs on U.S. goods, creating an uneven playing field that Trump’s strategy sought to address.

“Look, it’s always good when you have props,” Cuomo quipped, referencing Democrats’ warnings about rising costs for items like Corona beer and guacamole. “But if they really cared about inflation, they should have done something over the last few years. Instead, they just denied it and played the game of showing that the other party is worse.”

Cuomo argued that Trump’s approach, while often controversial and abrasive, had yielded tangible results. He highlighted recent agreements with Mexico and Canada, including Mexico’s commitment to deploy 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to crack down on illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking. In return, Trump pledged to address the flow of high-powered weapons from the U.S. into Mexico—a point Cuomo acknowledged as a significant but often overlooked issue.

“Mexico gets the overwhelming majority of their weapons from us. It’s messed up,” Cuomo said. “Canada went even further, promising to maintain spending commitments on border security and invest in new technology. These are real outcomes.”

Cuomo also emphasized the economic leverage the U.S. holds over its neighbors, noting that 26% of Mexico’s exports and 19% of Canada’s exports go to the U.S., while only 1.2% and 1.4% of U.S. GDP, respectively, are tied to exports to those countries. “Of course, Trump had the leverage,” Cuomo said. “Of course, they weren’t going to risk that kind of situation.”

The commentator urged the media and political leaders to move beyond style critiques of Trump and focus on the substance of his policies. “You cannot like Trump, but you have to give credit where it is due,” Cuomo said. “Otherwise, nothing can be fair. You want to be a fair broker when he screws up, and you’ve got to be a fair broker when things go the right way.”

Cuomo concluded by calling for a shift in how Trump’s actions are evaluated, urging critics to focus on outcomes rather than rhetoric. “The media needs to stop judging how Trump talks and focus on how he walks—what works for or against American interests,” he said. “There’s going to be plenty to scrutinize, but let’s at least be honest about what’s happening.”
