Christian Students In Alabama Win One: Liberal Historian Who Supports Abortion Disinvited From Keynote-Speaking Gig

As liberals argue that President Joe Biden can be a “devout” Catholic and still promote abortion, one small Alabama college is showing that it understands where that line is.

According to the conservative website The College Fix, Samford University, a private Christian school in Birmingham, disinvited presidential historian Jon Meacham from a keynote-speaker gig amid complaints about his attendance at a Planned Parenthood event.

Meacham was to be the featured speaker at a President Inauguration event this week.

But that changed after a campus grassroots campaign against his appearance.

More than 1,000 students at the 5,800-student university signed a petition demanding that Meacham get the boot.

Citing his affiliation with Planned Parenthood, the petition said Meacham’s “beliefs and core values do not align with those of Samford University, as it is a Southern Baptist institution.”

“Mr. Meacham is involved with raising money in support of an organization that does not value life in the same way the Christian faith does. As Samford is the top-ranked Christian University in Alabama, the invitation for Mr. Meacham to speak is not only disappointing, but alarming for the future of Samford,” the petition said.

But then the Student Government Association Senate adopted a resolution essentially calling for Meacham to go. The document noted, “The student body of Samford University petitions that the speaker at the presidential inauguration be a speaker that does not reject Biblical principles.”

Accordingly, it was Meacham who got rejected.

The victory for pro-lifers at Samford may be short-lived.

University President Beck Taylor and a campus PR person both told the campus newspaper Meacham would be invited back at a later date.

But Meacham is a lightning rod for conservatives.

Meacham was exposed earlier this year for his part in a media scandal.

The New York Times reported in January that Meacham wrote speeches for Democratic candidate Joe Biden and then appeared on MSNBC as a paid contributor to comment on speeches he wrote, without divulging he authored them.

Meacham was also critical of the Jan. 6 rioters, saying with a straight face, “We came as close to losing the country as we know it on January 6 as we have since the Civil War. And I say that with no hyperbole.”

At Samford, Meacham was supposed to talk about his new book, “The Soul of America: The Battle for our Better Angels.” Yet he also has called Donald Trump the “most racist” president in American history and said his support was based on followers with “the anguished, nervous white guy’s lizard brain.”

Certainly seems like the right person to discuss how we can find our “better angels.”
