The peaceful morning worship service at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, was shattered Sunday by a gunman who rammed his vehicle into the facility, opened fire, and then set the church ablaze, resulting in the deaths of at least four people.

The incident, which saw multiple law enforcement agencies respond, has been labeled an “act of targeted violence” by the FBI, which is now leading the investigation to determine a motive.

The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford of nearby Burton, reportedly drove a vehicle into the front doors of the church and then exited, firing an assault rifle at the congregation gathered inside. Authorities believe the suspect used an accelerant to deliberately start the massive fire that ultimately gutted the building.

Responding officers “neutralized” the suspect in the back parking lot within minutes of the initial 911 call.
