TAMPA, Fla – Today, the City of Tampa and Mayor Jane Castor joins elected officials, water utilities, community leaders, educators, and businesses from across the country as part of the eighth annual Imagine a Day Without Water, a nationwide day of education and advocacy about the value of water.
Led by the US Water Alliance’s Value of Water Campaign, over a thousand organizations across the country will join Imagine a Day Without Water on October 20, 2022, to raise awareness about the role of water infrastructure in our lives and the importance of investments to secure valuable water resources.
On Imagine a Day Without Water we ask our neighbors to think about what it would mean to go without water for a day.
Key Facts About Our Nation’s Infrastructure
- There are already two million Americans living without water service.
- Many communities are faced with the challenge of maintaining water infrastructure that is over a century old, creating growing concerns about the stability of water supplies and services.
- The Value of Water Campaign has helped to inspire more than $55 billion in federal funding for community drinking and wastewater infrastructure investments.
Mayor Jane Castor has requested that Old City Hall, located at 315 E. Kennedy Boulevard, along with Downtown bridges and the Tampa Riverwalk, be lit up in blue tonight to encourage people to sign the #OneWaterPledge and learn more about where our water comes from and where our wastewater goes.

“Healthy infrastructure is the foundation of a strong city, which is why the City of Tampa launched the Progressive Infrastructure Plan to Ensure Sustainability (PIPES), the largest public works project in the City’s history,” Mayor Jane Castor said. “This is transforming our 100-year-old water and wastewater infrastructure that serves close to 720,000 people. I believe that now, and for generations to come, water will be our most important resource and we need to do what we can to protect and preserve it.”
Tampa City Council passed this $2.9 billion funding plan for large-scale sewer and water infrastructure improvements in September 2019 after nearly 10 years without a utility rate increase.
This funding allows the City to adopt a proactive approach to renew our infrastructure, prevent breakdowns, and provide long-term, permanent fixes to our water and wastewater systems.
“We’re grateful to the City of Tampa and Mayor Castor for being a part of this year’s Imagine a Day Without Water,” said Oluwole (OJ) McFoy, Board Chair of the US Water Alliance. “Raising awareness about the state of water infrastructure is a crucial step to ensuring water systems keep flowing for generations to come. Even though we cannot see the pipes and sewers beneath our feet, water cannot be taken for granted. High-quality water service is a critical part of every thriving community. Today, we encourage everyone to take a minute to learn more about their local water system, where their drinking water comes from, and where their wastewater goes.”
