POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A Sunday night collision on State Road 33 claimed the lives of two motorcyclists and a Clermont man after a passing attempt ended in a head-on crash. Polk County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the 15000 block of Commonwealth Avenue around 8:26 p.m. on March 8, 2026, to find a massive debris field roughly six miles north of Polk City.

The investigation by Traffic Homicide detectives indicates that a male and female from Florida’s Sun Coast were traveling south side-by-side on two Harley Davidson motorcycles.

At the same time, a red 2013 Dodge Charger was heading north in a line of traffic. Witnesses told investigators that the driver of the Dodge Charger pulled into the southbound lane to pass three vehicles.

As the Charger reached the front of the line, it struck both oncoming motorcycles head-on. The impact ejected the male motorcyclist, who then struck a white 2011 Jeep Compass that was among the northbound vehicles being passed.

Both motorcyclists were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities are being withheld pending notification of their families.

The driver of the Dodge Charger, identified as 75-year-old Richard Lee Logan of Clermont, was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. His passenger, 75-year-old Janice M. Logan, survived the collision with minor injuries.

The driver of the Jeep Compass was not hurt and remained at the scene to cooperate with authorities.

The scale of the wreckage forced officials to close Commonwealth Avenue for approximately four and a half hours while investigators processed the scene. While the Polk County Sheriff’s Office states the investigation is still ongoing, deputies noted that no charges are anticipated at this time.
