POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A 22-year-old Lakeland man faces a criminal charge after a Polk County deputy clocked him driving more than 100 mph in a rental car on Monday evening.
The incident happened around 7:22 p.m. on State Road 60 near Lake Wales. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy patrolling the area spotted a blue 2023 Kia Rio traveling at a very high rate of speed. A radar check confirmed the vehicle was moving at 101 mph in a designated 55 mph zone.
The deputy initiated a traffic stop and identified the driver as George William Brown, Jr.
When questioned about the excessive speed, Brown told the deputy he did not realize he was driving that fast, stating that “the speedometer must have been broken.” He also informed the deputy that the vehicle was a Turo rental. Following those statements, Brown refused to speak any further with law enforcement.
Brown was arrested on the scene and transported to the Sheriff’s Processing Center. He has been officially charged with Dangerous Excessive Speeding, a second-degree misdemeanor.
