In the chaotic, somber aftermath of Monday night’s horrific Midtown Manhattan shooting, CNN anchor Erin Burnett found herself in an unexpected spotlight, and not just for her news reporting.

As details of the tragedy emerged, Burnett’s live description of gunman Shane Tamura as “possibly white” became a peculiar footnote, sparking a wave of head-scratching and, dare we say, a touch of dark humor on social media, even as the city reeled from the loss of life.

While the grim reality of the four fatalities, including a brave NYPD officer, weighed heavily, some viewers couldn’t help but do a double-take at Burnett’s on-air assessment.

With surveillance footage of 27-year-old Tamura, clearly not “possibly white,” already circulating, the comment left many wondering if the studio lights were playing tricks or if a new definition of “possibly” was being introduced.

One can almost picture the collective eyebrow raise across living rooms as Burnett and her co-anchor described the shooter from the footage: “sunglasses, mustache, male, possibly white.” It was a moment that proved even in the most serious of news cycles, a little verbal “misstep” can go a long, long way.

Of course, the gravity of the situation was never lost.

The city mourns deeply for the victims of Tamura’s rampage. Authorities have since confirmed Tamura’s identity and are investigating his motives, which appear to stem from a disturbing grievance with the National Football League regarding chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

A chilling note found on his body referenced former Pittsburgh Steeler Terry Long’s suicide and pleaded for his own brain to be studied, a stark reminder of the underlying torment that can lead to such horrific acts.

Tamura’s trail of destruction included the senseless killings of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, a security guard, and an unidentified woman in the skyscraper’s lobby, with another man critically injured. His final victim was shot on the 33rd floor before he took his own life, bringing an end to the terrifying ordeal.

While the nation grapples with yet another senseless act of gun violence, the internet, in its infinite and sometimes irreverent wisdom, found a moment of shared, albeit cautious, amusement in the “possibly white” descriptor. It served as a fleeting, almost surreal, distraction from the very real and heartbreaking tragedy, proving that even in the darkest of times, humanity’s ability to find the slightly absurd remains undimmed.
