DAVENPORT, Fla. – A Tuesday morning coffee run turned into a trip to the county jail for a Davie man accused of trying to sneak electronics out of a truck stop.

Polk County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Love’s Travel Stop on US 27 around 7:18 a.m. after employees reported a theft in progress. When the deputy arrived, the suspect was still lingering in the parking lot.

According to witness statements, the man—identified as 51-year-old Jose Luis Morales-Ramires—was seen taking a package of headphones into the store’s restroom.

Staff say he emerged moments later, placed the empty packaging back on a shelf, and then grabbed a cup of coffee before walking out without paying for any of it.

Employees quickly checked the shelf and confirmed the headphone box was empty.

Deputies detained Morales-Ramires in the lot and recovered the stolen merchandise. While the headphones were returned to the store, the suspect had already finished the stolen coffee.

Morales-Ramires, a Cuban national in the U.S. on a work visa, was arrested and transported to the Sheriff’s Processing Center to face a charge of Retail Theft.
