Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) loudly confronted her Republican colleagues on the House floor Tuesday night after a resolution to censure Del. Stacey Plaskett (D-Virgin Islands) and remove her from the House Intelligence Committee was defeated, thanks to a handful of Republican ‘no’ votes and ‘present’ votes.
The resolution, which aimed to rebuke Plaskett for her consultation with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during a 2019 congressional hearing, failed in a 209-214-3 vote.
Three Republicans—Reps. Don Bacon (Neb.), Lance Gooden (Tex.), and Dave Joyce (Ohio)—voted with all Democrats to defeat the measure. Three others—Reps. Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.), Dan Meuser (R-Pa.), and Jay Obernolte (R-Calif.)—voted present.
The defeat, pushed by the conservative House Freedom Caucus, immediately triggered a backlash from hardline Republicans.
Following the tally, Rep. Boebert was seen yelling and emphatically wagging her finger at fellow Republicans, including Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.).
The failure of the Plaskett censure also led to Democrats declining to pursue a censure resolution against Mills, who is facing accusations from an ex-girlfriend that led to a restraining order.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) amplified the internal discord by raising a parliamentary inquiry, asking the Speaker to explain why “leadership on both sides… are cutting back-end deals to cover up public corruption in the House of Representatives for both Republican and Democrat members of Congress.” Boebert cheered Luna’s question.
Luna later stated she believed “everything deserves a vote” in reference to the Mills censure. Mills’s office, however, denied any deal to stop the Plaskett censure to save a vote on his own.
