LARGO, Fla. – The Lighthouse of Pinellas is inviting the entire community to join in a celebration of independence and achievement at its inaugural White Cane Walk this Saturday, November 8th, at Largo Central Park.
Honoring White Cane Day and Promoting Awareness
The family-friendly event will honor White Cane Day, a national observance held annually on October 15th to celebrate the white cane as a crucial symbol of independence for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
Set for a morning of fun, connection, and awareness, the White Cane Walk will feature music, sensory stations, a game zone, and food. Attendees will also get a chance to meet puppies in training to become guide dogs.
A key focus of the event is to promote understanding and accessibility. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with a white cane obstacle course while blindfolded or using simulation goggles that replicate various eye conditions, offering a firsthand glimpse into the importance of the white cane and navigating the world with low or no vision.
A Call for Community Support
In the spirit of giving back, guests are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items. These donations will go directly to support Lighthouse clients who are facing food insecurity within the blind and visually impaired community.
Linda Kay O’Reilly, President & CEO of Lighthouse of Pinellas, emphasized the event’s significance: “We’re proud to bring the community together to celebrate the white cane and the independence it represents. Events like this shine a light on the abilities of people who are blind or visually impaired and the role our community plays in supporting them.”
Event Details and Mission
The White Cane Walk is made possible by the generous support of community partners and sponsors, including Presenting Sponsor St. Petersburg Lions Club, alongside Nordson Medical, Publix Super Markets Charities, and the Tampa Bay Rays Rowdies Foundation, among others. Representatives from these groups will join Lighthouse of Pinellas in honoring individuals with low vision or blindness.
The event directly reflects the mission of Lighthouse of Pinellas: to advance the independence and quality of life for Pinellas County residents who are blind or visually impaired through free training, programs, and support services.
