CLEARWATER, Fla. – Drivers planning to travel between Tampa and Clearwater late Monday night need to find a different route. All lanes of State Road 60, widely known as the Courtney Campbell Causeway, will completely close in both directions starting at 10 p.m. on June 1. The roadway is scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, assuming the weather cooperates.
The total shutdown is required so construction crews can safely perform overhead bridge work. This task is a major step in building the upcoming SR 60 pedestrian overpass project in Pinellas County.
Because the causeway will be entirely blocked off, the Florida Department of Transportation has mapped out specific detours for the overnight hours.
Westbound drivers trying to head into Pinellas County will be forced off SR 60 and directed to use SR 580 (Hillsborough Avenue) and US 19 to loop back around to their destination. Alternatively, motorists can take southbound Interstate 275 across the Howard Frankland Bridge, take Exit 31 onto Ulmerton Road, hook a right onto US 19, and head north to reconnect with SR 60.
Eastbound travelers leaving Clearwater will face a different detour. They must use County Road 611 (Bayside Bridge), turn left onto Ulmerton Road, and follow it east to the northbound I-275 entrance ramp to cross the Howard Frankland Bridge back into Tampa.
Electronic message boards and highway warning signs are already being set up to guide drivers along these detours. State transportation officials are urging everyone on the road to stay alert for construction workers and to use extra caution while navigating the active work zones.
