Dr. Anthony Fauci has repeatedly denied the U.S. public health establishment engaged in “gain of function” research in Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, even as the evidence mounted it did so on his watch and with his blessing.
But with Fauci out of power in his previous role as America’s leading infectious disease researcher, lawmakers in Congress seek to remove the doubt — even as Fauci argued as recently as last month that GOF research is good and necessary.
According to the White Coat Waste Project, or WCW, a watchdog group within the scientific research community, GOP Reps. Buddy Carter, Mike Gallagher, and Democrat Henry Cuellar (D-TX) recently introduced a bill that would halt all GOF research for five years.

Their bill — the Pausing Enhanced Pandemic Pathogen Research Act — comes after Sen. Roger Marshall, a Kansas Republican, introduced a similar bill in January.
In a statement, WCW argued that these bills, which the group support, are critical and necessary to stop dangerous research.
GOF experiments seek to boost the intensity of certain viruses so scientists can learn how to prevent or treat them in the future.

But as Fauci critics contend, including the WCW, this research got out of hand in Wuhan, and unleashed the pandemic that has killed 7 million people, including 1 million Americans.
“Cutting funding for these scary GOF studies — which are completely unnecessary to prevent and combat future pandemics — will save tax dollars, animals, and civilization itself,” WCW said in its statement.
“Indeed, records show that using taxpayers’ money and in violation of a federal ban, Wuhan white coats intentionally supercharged bat coronaviruses to make them infectious to humans and thousands of times deadlier. In their dangerous, cruel, and wasteful animal experiments, ‘humanized mice’ became seriously ill and had a 75% death rate. Then, workers at the lab became sick with a mysterious pneumonia-like illness in mid-2019 and the lab soon disappeared its public database of viruses.”

“For years, WCW has been urging the Biden Administration and Congress to defund these kinds of risky GOF animal experiments. When Joe Biden was [vice president], the White House even paused funding for GOF experiments from 2014 to 2017 over concerns that they could a deadly outbreak (as virus labs have done before in the U.S. and China).”
“We’re making progress! Following WCW advocacy and lobbying, the 2023 federal spending bill defunded dangerous virus experiments in ‘countries of concern’ (like China). But, we need to do the same here at home, or Wuhan will happen all over again, but this time on U.S. soil.”
