A Manchester, Connecticut, man is in federal custody Friday following a high-speed pursuit and a violent physical altercation at the Maine-Canada border. Devin Austin Bishop, 29, was charged with assaulting a federal officer and failing to report his arrival into the United States on February 22, 2026.

Court documents allege that Bishop sped across the bridge from Campobello Island, Canada, into Lubec, Maine, at one point driving into the outbound lane to avoid the Port of Entry. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer pursued Bishop’s vehicle until he pulled over on a road in Lubec.

When the officer attempted to make an arrest, Bishop allegedly resisted and forcibly assaulted the agent. During the struggle, Bishop reportedly grabbed for the officer’s service weapon.

The firearm discharged during the fight, though authorities confirmed that no one was hit by the gunfire.

The officer was eventually able to secure Bishop with the help of a passing motorist who stopped to assist.

Bishop now faces up to eight years in prison for the assault charge and one year for failing to present himself for inspection.

The FBI is leading the ongoing investigation with support from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
