Commissioner Anthony Sabatini Spearheaded Unanimous Resolution to Honor Kirk, Citing His Impact and as a Stand Against Political Violence.
LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – The Lake County Commission has voted unanimously to name a road in honor of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated earlier this month. The decision makes Lake County the first local government in the nation to dedicate a road to Kirk, a prominent figure in the youth conservative movement and founder of Turning Point USA.
The resolution was proposed by Lake County Commissioner Anthony Sabatini (D-1), who announced the news on social media. In an interview on Thursday, Sabatini said that the unanimous 5-0 vote demonstrated a moment of unity in the aftermath of a national tragedy.
“I think that this Memorial also is a way of pushing back against political violence,” Sabatini said Thursday on Fox Live Now. “No matter what your political views are, it’s a way of saying political violence should always be condemned. We embrace the people who are victims of such a horrible thing.”
Sabatini chose a busy commuter road located near the Disney theme park area for the dedication, noting that naming a landmark or road is a popular way to honor a significant person.
He cited several “objective reasons” for the tribute, including Kirk’s leadership of a large youth movement, his success in registering young voters, and his posthumous recognition as a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Beyond Kirk’s public achievements, Sabatini also shared a personal connection, describing Kirk as a friend and a “particularly interesting and significant person” who was “a kind guy.” He recounted the emotional shock of learning about the shooting and his decision to seek a way to honor Kirk in a meaningful way.
The decision has already prompted interest from other communities, with Sabatini stating he has received calls and messages from dozens of cities and counties across the country looking to do something similar. He expects Arizona, where Kirk was living at the time of his death, to be among the first to follow Lake County’s lead.
The speedy approval of the resolution—within two weeks of its proposal—surprised Sabatini, who said that such measures typically take a month or two. He credited the quick action to staff recognizing the “political significance” of the event and the widespread desire to honor Kirk.
The road dedication is seen not only as a memorial to Kirk’s legacy of inspiring “civic revival in America” and “Americanism,” but also as a powerful statement against political violence. Sabatini concluded that the unanimous vote shows how people with different viewpoints can unite in the face of tragedy and honor an individual who, in their eyes, did great things for the country.
