HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – New data released for 2025 shows that Hillsborough County has hit a historic milestone in public safety, marking its fourth consecutive year of falling crime rates.

According to figures submitted to the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), the county saw a 12.79% drop in overall crime compared to the previous year. This latest dip represents the most significant single-year decline since the downward trend began in 2022.

The steady retreat of criminal activity comes even as the region experiences a continued influx of new residents. Since 2022, the numbers have moved consistently in one direction: a 6.2% drop that first year, followed by an 8.23% decrease in 2023, and a 12.3% reduction in 2024.

“These numbers aren’t just impressive, they’re historic,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister. “While communities across the country are experiencing turmoil and rising crime, we are not, because we won’t allow it here. People continue to move to Hillsborough County, and despite that growth, crime is going down. That doesn’t happen by chance. It happens because we are relentless about protecting this community and making sure Hillsborough County remains a safe place to live, visit, and raise a family.”

The most dramatic changes appeared in categories of serious offenses. Homicides plummeted by 55%, falling from 49 incidents in 2024 to 22 in 2025.

Violent crime involving firearms decreased by 10.55%, and the broader category of violent crime saw a 13.85% reduction. Property owners also saw a shift in the landscape, with vehicle burglaries dropping by 29% and general property crimes falling by more than 22% over the last twelve months.

Law enforcement leadership attributed these results to a mix of specialized enforcement and technological adaptation. The agency pointed to the creation of targeted groups, such as the Drug Interdiction Unit and the newly formed Domestic Violence Unit, as key drivers in addressing specific community vulnerabilities.

Chronister emphasized that the sustained decline is rooted in the strategic deployment of resources and a collaborative relationship with the County Administrator and Commissioners, who have funded the technology and tools used by deputies on the ground.

As the county continues to grow, the Sheriff’s Office indicated it plans to keep refining its task forces to stay ahead of emerging trends.

“None of this happens without the men and women of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff Chronister said. “Their passion, dedication, and willingness to work together are what make this office special. I don’t take one second of their commitment for granted. They sacrifice every day for this community, and these results belong to them.”
