Tropical Depression Cristobal has weakened over the open Atlantic Ocean and is expected to dissipate completely later Thursday, according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center.
As of 9:00 a.m. Thursday, the center of the depression was positioned near latitude 38.6 North, longitude 38.2 West, roughly 610 miles west of the Azores. The system is tracking toward the northeast at approximately 16 mph.
Data from satellite imaging and ocean surface wind sensors showed that maximum sustained winds dropped to near 35 mph with higher gusts. The estimated minimum central pressure sits at 1014 mb.
Forecasters noted an ongoing lack of deep thunderstorm activity near the storm’s center due to unfavorable atmospheric conditions.
“Based on the increasingly harsh environmental conditions that the storm is entering as well as the latest model guidance, Cristobal is expected to continue weakening, and it is unlikely that convection will make a comeback,” National Hurricane Center meteorologists wrote in their forecast discussion. “Thus, the NHC forecast now calls for Cristobal to become a remnant low within the next 12 h, with dissipation following soon after.”
No coastal watches or warnings are in effect, and the National Hurricane Center reported no hazards affecting land.
