Millions of Americans hitting the road and skies for the Thanksgiving holiday may face significant travel delays next week due to a massive storm system expected to impact the eastern two-thirds of the United States.

AccuWeather meteorologists are warning of widespread disruptions during what is projected to be a record-breaking travel period, with the AAA estimating nearly 82 million people venturing at least 50 miles from home.

Weekend to Early Week: The storm, originating in the Southwest, will bring drenching downpours and potentially severe thunderstorms across the central and southern U.S. Major airports in Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and Little Rock could see flight impacts from late Sunday through Monday.

Tuesday Turbulence: As the system moves into the Mississippi Valley, a large area of heavy rain and possible severe weather is forecast. Travel hubs including Chicago, Nashville, St. Louis, and Houston may experience significant flight delays on Tuesday.

Busiest Travel Day (Wednesday): The storm will lose some intensity as it moves toward the Northeast, but even limited rainfall could cause major problems on the roads and runways from Washington, D.C., to Boston due to the high volume of travelers. Thunderstorms may also delay flights in southeastern hubs like Atlanta and Charlotte.

Thanksgiving Day Outlook: Colder air will move in behind the storm, bringing blustery conditions and potential lake-effect snow to the Great Lakes. While New York City’s parade may dodge the worst of the weather, a late-arriving cold front could still bring wet or windy conditions to the Atlantic Seaboard.

Travelers are advised to closely monitor weather forecasts and check for flight updates, especially if traveling on Tuesday or Wednesday.
