Former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, now running for New York City mayor as an independent, leveled sharp criticism at the Democratic Party on Monday, accusing it of failing to deliver for working-class Americans and becoming “disconnected” from its base.

Appearing on “Morning Joe,” Cuomo shamed the party for allowing housing costs to skyrocket, noting that the average rent in New York City now stands at a staggering $4,029 per month, with the average monthly cost of living reaching $4,130.

“Shame on you, Democratic Party, because you haven’t delivered,” Cuomo stated. “The Democratic Party… they have become disconnected from mainstream working families who were our base, my father’s base, Bill Clinton’s base, President Obama’s base.”

Cuomo argued that the party has failed to produce tangible results for its core voters. Citing a lesson from the late Senator Ted Kennedy, he emphasized the need for voters to “know one thing you did that changed their lives.”

“You can’t name something that the Democratic Party did that changed their lives, right? That they know inherently,” Cuomo asserted. “The Democratic Party has to produce.”

Cuomo, who lost the Democratic primary and is now challenging the frontrunners, also took aim at his progressive opponent, Mamdani, who has campaigned on rent freezes, raising the minimum wage to $30, and adding government-run grocery stores and buses.

Cuomo questioned Mamdani’s qualifications, highlighting his opponent’s age and experience. “For mayor, 33 years old, never had a job, never managed anything. An assemblyman passed three bills, worst attendance record in the New York State Assembly,” Cuomo said. He concluded that such a record would “sound the problem” for an executive role.
