Cuomo: Michigan Rep. Tlaib Should Be Censured For Personal Attack On Florida Rep. Donalds

Cuomo says Tlaib’s ‘ad hominem’ attack against Rep. Byron Donalds violated House decorum.

A House Oversight Committee hearing on crime in the nation’s capital erupted in a heated shouting match last Thursday, as Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Republican Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida traded barbs over Tlaib’s use of the term “fascist.”

The confrontation, which has been widely circulated, has now drawn a call for Tlaib’s censure from an unlikely source: NewsNation host Chris Cuomo.

The exchange began when Tlaib, during her turn to speak, stated that Democrats “can’t be passive” and that Republicans should not take her words personally, as they are “attacking a process.” She then used the term “fascist takeover,” adding, “That’s not a bad word. It’s a fact.”

Her remarks quickly drew a fiery response from Donalds, who attempted to interrupt Tlaib to ask a question. Tlaib, however, refused to yield, prompting Donalds to snap back.

“Chairman, I think it’s insane that the gentlelady doesn’t have an argument, but she’s going to refer to me and some of my colleagues like we were from the Third Reich,” Donalds said, his voice rising. “This is insane… Do I look like a member of the Third Reich to you, Ms. Tlaib?”

The exchange quickly devolved into a shouting match, with Tlaib heard screaming, “Free DC! Free DC! And make sure you vote with your own voting card. Don’t be giving it to somebody else.”

On his podcast, “The Chris Cuomo Project,” Cuomo stated that he believes Tlaib “should be censured” for her behavior, arguing that her personal attack on Donalds violated House rules against “ad hominem” remarks.

“Because we know that decorum has to be enforced if your goal is decency and cogency,” Cuomo explained, emphasizing that such personal attacks are prohibited in various formal settings.

The incident highlights a growing debate within the Democratic party about the use of charged language when describing political opponents, a discussion that has gained new prominence following the death of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

While the hearing was focused on crime in Washington, D.C., an issue at the center of a national political debate, the procedural and personal attacks took center stage.
