Mayoral candidate and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo appeared on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures this morning to discuss his bid for New York City’s highest office, targeting his Democratic socialist rival Zohran Mamdani and weighing in on a potential working relationship with President Donald Trump.

Cuomo framed the race against Mamdani as a battle against the “far left of the Democratic party,” describing his rival’s platform proposals as “socialist talk” and lacking a basis in reality. He specifically dismissed key Mamdani initiatives, including “free buses,” “free grocery stores,” and a “freeze the rent,” arguing they are simply not feasible under a mayoral administration. “None of it is reality,” Cuomo stated, pointing out that the mayor has “no legal authority to freeze the rent” as that power belongs to an independent board, and that the state, not the city, controls the buses, making free transit an impossibility. He concluded that this kind of policy “would be terrible for New York City.”

When asked about the prospect of working with President Trump, particularly on issues of city security and border management, Cuomo expressed an optimistic willingness to cooperate. He noted that they had successfully worked together during Trump’s first term while Cuomo was governor, saying he doesn’t “assume that’s true” that a Democratic mayor must fight with a Republican president.

“I’m going to try cooperation,” Cuomo said, stating he believes President Trump, as a native New Yorker, “cares about New York” and would be “open to a cooperative path.” He affirmed his intent to “appeal to that instinct first,” before political differences could create conflict.

The former Governor also highlighted his own platform, which centers on security, vowing to hire 5,000 new police officers and stating his commitment to keeping New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tish. Regarding the state of the race, Cuomo claimed that a new New York Post poll shows the margin between him and Mamdani is now down to six points, stating, “He’s coming down, I’m going up.”

Cuomo also criticized Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, calling him a “spoiler” in the election and stating that any vote for him “is a vote for Mamdani.”
