Nick Reiner has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances in the killing of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced Tuesday.
Standing alongside LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, Hochman confirmed that the 32-year-old could face a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole or potentially the death penalty, though his office has not yet decided whether to seek execution.
“Their loss is beyond tragic, and we will commit ourselves to bringing their murderer to justice,” Hochman said, noting that the filing represents “the most serious charge the DA’s office can bring against anyone.”

Weapon and Motive Confirmed
Official details regarding the crime scene have now been released. Hochman confirmed that a knife was used in the slayings, aligning with reports from sources who said the couple was found with multiple stab wounds inside their home.
While authorities have not released an official motive, witnesses have provided a glimpse into the family’s final hours. According to reports, the Reiners attended a party at Conan O’Brien’s home the night before the killings, where Rob and Nick Reiner were seen having a brief but “loud argument.”
“Medical Miss Out” Delays Court
Nick Reiner, who is being held without bond, did not appear for his scheduled arraignment on Tuesday. His attorney stated he was not medically cleared for transport. Greg Risling, a spokesperson for the District Attorney’s office, characterized the absence as a “medical miss out,” though no specific details on his condition were provided.
High-Profile Plans Cancelled
The timing of the discovery has added to the shock for the family’s inner circle. Former First Lady Michelle Obama revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday night that she and former President Barack Obama had dinner plans with the Reiners for Sunday evening.
“We were supposed to be seeing them that night, last night, and we got the news,” she said.
