CLEARWATER, Fla. – A construction accident yesterday afternoon at a new grocery store site in Clearwater tragically resulted in the death of one worker and injuries to another. The incident, which occurred at approximately 4:55 p.m. at 1295 S. Missouri Ave., involved the collapse of a scissor lift.
Victor Hugo Martinez Gelves, 38, of Davenport, was identified as the worker who succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Morton Plant Hospital.

The second worker, Gustavo Esmir Linarez Castillo, 43, of Orlando, was taken to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Original Report: Two construction workers sustained serious injuries this afternoon after a scissor lift collapsed at a new grocery store construction site, prompting a rapid response from Clearwater Police and Clearwater Fire & Rescue.
Emergency crews were dispatched to 1295 S. Missouri Ave., a shopping center currently under construction, at approximately 4:55 p.m. following reports of an accident. The preliminary investigation indicates that a scissor lift failed, causing two workers to fall.

Both injured men were transported to local hospitals as trauma alerts, indicating the severity of their injuries. One worker was taken to Morton Plant Hospital, while the other was transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital. Their current conditions have not been released.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been notified of the incident and is expected to launch an investigation into the cause of the scissor lift collapse.
